THE ANCIENT CITY OF SİDE
Kymelians, who lived in Western Anatolia, chose a small peninsula extending to the Mediterranean as a living area in the 7th century BC. It is claimed that the people of Side founded this city. According to the local language used in Side, the word Side means “Pomegranate Side. As it is known, pomegranate symbolizes fertility in Anatolia. Until the Roman Empire, this symbol was used on Side coins. Side respectively; Lydia, Persia, Alexander the Great and Hellenistic kingdoms came under the rule. The golden years of the city took place between the 1st and 3rd centuries BC when it was connected with Rome. Most of the magnificent structures in the city were built during this period. The city, which had lost its importance after the 5th century, was completely abandoned after the 10th century due to earthquakes and fires. Some historians say that in the 10th century, the city turned into a pirate bed and Arab Geographer Idrisi claimed that Antalya was called ağ Yanık Antalya a because of the immigration of the people who left the city as a result of fires.
