It is among the crossroads of Silk Road,carried a big significance for trading nations , throughout history .With the collapse of the Hittite Empire young Hittite Kings ,carried the traces of Assyria and Phrygia , established their dominations in the region. “Country Of Beautiful Horses”
The name used today “Cappadocia” has the meaning of “Country Of Beautiful Horses” in Persian language in history. In B.C. 332 Persian was defeated by Alexander The Great but he faced the resistance of Cappadocia. After the events Cappadocia Kingdom was established and at the end of B.C. 3th century Romans gained dominance of the region.In the middle of B.C. 1st century the decisions of accessions and dethronements belonged to Roman generals .In A.D. 17 according to the death of last Cappadocia king region became one of the states of Roman .With coming of Christians to Cappadocia the region became a center of education and thought for them. In this period the pressures to Christians increased quitely . Cappadocia was thought as an ideal region to proselytize Christianity .The shelters, they carved into the rocks, became the shelters of Roman soldiers.
After the IV century it was the period when the people known as the “Fathers of Cappadocia “ gain dominance.After the icons banned by Leon III Cappadocia region became more important. Iconoclasm movement lasted between the years of 726-843 gave a chance to the people who were at the side of icons could worship comfortably there. Monasteries developed quitely in this region at this period.
Finally Anatolia,extending from Armenia to Cappadocia and the area where Christians settled down ,faced to the Arab invasion. In this situation while many refugee people were living in Cappadocia ,they changed the styles of churces. Then the region passing into hands of Seljuks after that it underwent a smooth period of Ottoman domination .
Christians ,living in the region, abandoned the region between 1924-26 and left beautiful architectural works their behind.

Traditional Cappadocian houses and dovecotes ,carved into the rocks ,express the uniqueness of the region. They were built of rocks or ashlar stones. Avanos, Urgup, Goreme, Akvadi, Uchisar and Ortahisar Castles, El Nazar Church, Aynalı Church, Guvercinlik Valley, Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı, Özkonak Underground Cities, Ihlara Valley ,Selime village, Cavuşin Güllüdere Valley, Paşabağ-Zelve are almost open museum in Cappadocia .
